About Work Visa

Before we talk about a work visa, let’s be clear about what “visa” means. A visa is a permit that’s stamped on your passport, enabling you to enter a foreign country for a specific purpose. A visa can also be issued as a letter.

When you enter a foreign country, you will have to show your visa to that country’s immigration officials. This is done either at the border or at the airport/port. In some cases, the visa is stamped on your passport upon arrival in a foreign country.

Every visa has the following details:

  • Type
  • Date of expiry
  • Date and place of issue
  • Place of birth of the visa holder
  • Name and date of birth of the visa holder

Visas can be immigrant visas or non-immigrant visas. Immigrant visas allow people to move overseas to a foreign country permanently. Non-immigrant visas are valid for a limited period after which they may have to be extended or the visa-holder must exit the country.

A work visa is often issued as a non-immigrant visa and it must not be confused with a work permit at a technical level.

You have to understand the difference between a work permit and a work visa. Let’s try to understand this by citing the example of a US work visa and work permit.

In the US, the primary purpose of a work visa is to come to the country and stay there to work. A work permit on the other hand is a document issued by the USCIS to one who holds a visa other than a work visa. The work permit allows the holder to work for a certain period under certain conditions. An example can be a work permit granted to students enabling them to work along with their studies.

FAQ
How do I get a work visa?

If you want to work in a certain country legally, you will need a work visa. The permission to work will be for a specific period of time.

In most countries, you need to have a job offer from an employer in that country before you apply for a work visa. Whoever has given you the job offer must also sponsor your visa. You may also need to have a positive Labour Market Test prior to applying for the same.

So, to get a work visa you must first meet the eligibility requirements of the visa as specified by the country issuing it.

In which countries is it easy to get a work visa?

A work visa is essentially a work permit that lets you enter a foreign country and work there legally for a certain period of time.

Different countries have different eligibility requirements and procedures for a work visa.

In some countries, you will require a job offer before you can apply for a work visa. You must also be sponsored by the company which has given you the job offer.

Some countries allow you entry on a tourist or business visa. Once you reach there, you may apply for a work visa after obtaining a job offer.

There are certain countries that allow you to submit an application for a job-seeker visa. You may enter the country using that visa and then apply for a work visa once you get a job offer.

Thus, it’s not possible to point out the countries where it’s “easy” to get a work visa. The ease of getting a work visa depends on a number of conditions like the country, eligibility requirements, etc. If you meet all the eligibility requirements of the work visa of a particular country, then you may be able to obtain a work visa.

Is a work visa costly?

The cost of a work visa varies with the country that you are applying for.

In Canada is a work visa costs you CAD 155. You will also need to pay extra if you include your family in the visa application.

To submit an application for an Australian Subclass 482 visa, you must pay AUD 1,265 for the primary applicant. For an adult-dependent, you will have to pay AUD 1,265.  For a child dependent the cost is AUD 320.

For example, the processing time for a Canada work visa is 5 weeks when applied from India and 2 weeks if applied from the US.

What does it take to get a work visa?

Most countries offer work visas to meet their labor shortage. Often employers find it difficult to fill a particular job locally as they cannot find the required skills in their country. This generally happens with high-skilled as well as trades jobs.

You should have the necessary skills that are in demand in a particular country to get a work visa. You should also have the necessary educational qualifications and any certifications that may be needed for the job. You should also have the necessary work experience required for the job.

Some countries may also require you to take a language proficiency test. This is particularly true for English-speaking countries where you may need to take an English test like IELTS before applying for a work visa.

What would you suggest I do first; get a job or apply for the work permit/PR?

To deal with the talent shortage in their respective countries, many countries offer permanent residence to skilled foreign professionals. This gives prospective candidates the status of a local and greatly improves the chances of their finding a job. Also, with a permanent residence, an employer’s sponsorship isn’t required.

On the other hand, a work permit is for a limited time only and is contract-based as well.

While individual circumstances might differ from person to person, permanent residence usually provides people better returns when compared to a work permit.

What is the difference between a work visa and a work permit?

A work visa is issued by the immigration authorities at the immigration office. An immigration official has the right to allow the person into the country for the purpose of work. A work permit is issued by an international or national company that outsources in other countries for the sake of hiring professional staff.

While a work visa is a document needed for entering a particular country to live and work, a work permit is an employment letter that’s issued to an employee by an employer for the sake of entering the country.
