UK Dependent Visa

The UK Dependent Visa allows UK citizens and holders of certain visas to bring their dependents to live with them in the UK. With this visa, you can bring your spouse, children, parents, and other close relatives to the UK.

The sponsor must show that he will be able to provide for his dependents while they are in the UK. To establish that he has the required funds, he must provide his bank statement.

This visa is open to both families and children. The sponsor is a permanent resident or citizen of the United Kingdom who can apply for the visa on behalf of their family members.

A child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependent

Here are some options to apply for a UK family visa

 Tier 2 visa: Tier 2 visa holders can apply for a dependent visa and bring their spouse and children with them to the United Kingdom. You can study and work in the UK with this visa, however there are certain limits. You can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years, which allows you to stay in the UK indefinitely.

UK Parent, Spouse or Child Visa: British citizens and permanent residents can invite their non-UK-based dependent spouse, parents, or children to live with them on a UK Parent, Spouse, or Child Visa. This visa will be valid for two years and six months, with the possibility to renew it for another two years and six months.

Eligibility conditions
  • You must be the sponsor’s spouse, unmarried partner, or civil partner to qualify as a dependent. As dependents of the sponsor, children under the age of 18 can apply for a visa to the United Kingdom.
  • You must be able to demonstrate one of the following as the sponsor’s spouse or partner:
  • In the United Kingdom, you are in a legally recognized civil partnership or marriage.
  • You must be the sponsor’s spouse, unmarried partner, or civil partner to qualify as a dependent. As dependents of the sponsor, children under the age of 18 can apply for a visa to the United Kingdom.
  • You must be able to demonstrate one of the following as the sponsor’s spouse or partner:
  •  In the United Kingdom, you are in a legally recognized civil partnership or marriage.
  • You must have been in a relationship for at least two years when you submit your application.
  • You must also demonstrate that you can communicate well in English.
  • Within six months of your arrival in the United Kingdom, you plan to marry or enter into a civil union.
  • You must also demonstrate that you have a strong command of the English language.
Duration of stay

 If you meet the immigration requirements for this visa, you will be given permanent residency in the United Kingdom. Holders of Dependent Visas may seek for British Naturalization as a British citizen after 5 years of continuous residence in the UK.

 Documents required

The documents required for a Dependent Visa is based on the route under which you apply. The documents you require include:

  • Passport & travel history
  • Background documentation
  • Spouse/partner documentation including marriage certificate
  • Other proof of relationship
  • Income proof of sponsor to show you have the required finances
  • Completed application form
  • Proof of having paid the application fees
  • Proof of English language skills
  • Children must be under the age of 18 at the time of application
Application process

A dependent can choose to apply for the visa either within or outside the UK.

Applying from within the United Kingdom

If they have come to the UK on a family visa, dependents can choose to stay with their family. They can change to a family visa to stay with their spouse, kid, or parent if they arrived on another visa.

Applying from outside the United Kingdom

Dependents who want to live with their spouse or partner, child, parent, or relative may apply for a visa from outside the UK.
