What is OET Exam pattern?

The OET exam checks all your language skills required to work in a healthcare environment, including speaking, reading, listening, and writing.

We have briefed you about the sub-test of these language skills below:

  • Listening: The listening sub-test takes around 40 minutes to complete and is divided into three parts.
  • Reading: The reading sub-test takes 60 minutes to complete and is divided into three parts as well.
  • Writing: The writing test is of 45 minutes and is designed per the answerer's specific profession.
  • Speaking: The speaking test section takes 20 minutes to complete and is also profession specific.

Modes of OET exam

The OET examinees can take the test in the following modes:

  • On paper at a test venue
  • On the computer at attest venue
  • At home

OET band descriptors

A

450 - 500

Can communicate very fluently and effectively with patients and health professionals using appropriate register, tone and lexis. Shows complete understanding of any kind of written or spoken language.

B

350 - 440

Can communicate effectively with patients and health professionals using appropriate register, tone and lexis, with only occasional inaccuracies and hesitations. Shows good understanding in a range of clinical contexts.

C+

300 – 340

Can maintain the interaction in a relevant healthcare environment despite occasional errors and lapses, and follow standard spoken language normally encountered in his/her field of specialisation.

C

200 - 290

D

100 - 190

Can maintain some interaction and understand straightforward factual information in his/her field of specialisation, but may ask for clarification. Frequent errors, inaccuracies and mis-or overuse of technical language can cause strain in communication.

E

0-90

Can manage simple interaction on familiar topics and understand the main point in short, simple messages, provided he/she can ask for clarification. High density of errors and mis- or overuse of technical language can cause significant strain and breakdowns in communication.

 

 

OET Exam Fees
For OET registration, candidates need to pay an OET Exam fee of $375 as part of the registration process.

OET Test Centres, Timing, Validity and Results

The OET Test scores are valid only for 2 years.

One can take the OET test 14 times a year, and the results of the test are published online after 16 business days of taking the test.

The exam is held in over 40 countries across 120 locations.

In Australia, one can take the test in the following cities:
