What’s PGP?

The Parents and Grandparents Program is meant to enable Canadian permanent residents and Canadian citizens to bring their parents and grandparents to live with them in Canada.

Canada has been very generous about the intention that PGP realizes as with any family sponsorship program. The PGP program serves the goal of retaining skilled immigrants in Canada by allowing them to reunite and live with their parents and grandparents who will be sponsored to live with them. When they sponsor parents to Canada, as well as grandparents, they will receive permanent residency in the country.

More on the latest updates on PGP

The PGP program plans were announced recently and IRCC’s targets were revealed. The IRCC will continue with its work to accept up to 15,000 complete family sponsorship applications under PGP in 2022. IRCC will start issuing ITAs (invitations to apply) to 23,100 potential sponsors who are interested to utilize PGP. These ITAs will be issued over a time period of 2 weeks.

There are many application forms for sponsorship waiting to be approved in the submission pools from 2020 and 2021. These interest to sponsor forms will be randomly selected and ITAs issued to the sponsors. Any potential sponsor who made a submission of Interest to Sponsor form in 2020, but didn’t receive an ITA in January or September 2021, should check their email for any communication.

Canada Parents and Grandparents Super Visa stay time increased to 5 years

Another significant decision made by the IRCC is lowering the income requirement to apply for sponsorship under PGP. For tax years 2020 and 2021 the requirement of income for sponsors will be set at the minimum required income. Regular benefits for Employment Insurance and temporary COVID-19 benefits will be permitted to be included toward the income of the sponsor.

Potential sponsors wanting to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada, but who aren't issued invitations in 2022, may consider urging their parents/grandparents to lodge an application for a Super Visa. This is a multiple-entry visa with a validity of 10 years.
