Latest update about Australia State Sponsorship

With the new immigration program year starting on 1st July 2019, states and territories in Australia are slowly opening up their sponsorship schemes. The Australian Govt. is also gearing up for the closure of the Subclass 489 Visa. The last date to issue invitations under the Subclass 489 Visa is 10th September. 

Here is the latest update about the Australia state sponsorship: 

• Victoria 

Victoria will launch a new online portal on 29th July. Applicants can now directly apply to Victoria for a state nomination instead of lodging an EOI like in the past. 

• New South Wales 

NSW has launched a new online system which shows the availability of occupations for a state nomination. The online system is frequently updated to show the current status of occupations, as per SBS News. 

Certain occupations on the Priority Skilled Occupation List need to satisfy some additional conditions to qualify for a state nomination. Applicants who are currently living and working in NSW can only apply for certain occupations on the priority list. 

• South Australia 

South Australia has increased the requirement of the “high points category” to 85 points from 26th July. Occupations on the South Australia SOL are also getting filled up fast with some of them reaching the quota in a matter of days. 

• Queensland 

Queensland has opened its Business Migration and the Skills Migration program. The BSMQ Skilled Migration Program will prioritize Subclass 489 applications till mid-August. This is being done to allow time before the cut-off date of 10th Sep. 

• Australian Capital Territory 

ACT issued 523 invitations in July based on the Canberra matrix. Candidates living and working in Canberra were prioritized especially the ones who were long-time residents. 

• Northern Territory 

The processing time for offshore applications is currently about 6 months. This is not good news for applicants under the Subclass 489 Visa as there isn’t much time left for its closure. The NT Govt. is currently reviewing its processes to expedite it. 

• Western Australia 

The Western Australia Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) is currently restricted only for medical professionals. The Graduate Occupation list has a wider variety of occupations, especially for those who have completed their PhD from WA. 

• Tasmania 

Tasmania has decided to prioritize Subclass 489 applications prior to its closure. All 489 applicants for Tasmania state sponsorship are urged to lodge their applications latest by the first week of August.
