How to move to France

France has a 2-tier immigration system. There are basically 3 types of French stay visas:

  • Short Stay Visa for visits that lasts for 3 months or lesser (Uniform Schengen visa or C Visa)
    • Suitable for short-term study, business trips, family visits, tourism, short-term visits for work, and medical care
  • Temporary Long Stay visa if you are staying in France for a year
    • Once you arrive in France on this visa, you must validate it within 3 months.
    • After validation, you can travel anywhere in the Schengen area.
  • Long-Stay Visa if you are going to stay for more than a year in France
    • With this visa, you can travel anywhere in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in a period of 180 days.
    • It will be necessary that you apply for a new French Residence Permit within 2 months of arrival to stay in France legally.

Most standard residence permits issued by France have a validity of 1 year. These are renewable for up to 5 years. After a continuous stay for 5 years in France, you will be eligible for a long-term permit with 10-year validity. This can be renewed too.
