Nagender Chetti is a resident of Melbourne and a few years ago his brother moved to Queensland. After his brother migrated to Australia, Mr Chetti would often worry about his mother who lived alone in India. He tried to visit her as and when possible but frequent visits were not possible.

So when the new Parent Visa of Australia was introduced, he decided to apply for one for his mother Annapurna Chetti. He submitted his sponsorship application as soon as the visa opened in April this year. He proceeded to submit the visa application once the Dept. of Home Affairs started accepting them.

While submitting the Parent Visa application, Mr Chetti also decided to apply for a normal Visitor Visa for his mother. However, to his utter surprise, the Parent Visa application was approved in less than 10 days. He did not even have to submit the normal Visitor Visa application. He says that his mother arrived in Australia a few days back and it has been a happy reunion for his family.

David Coleman, Immigration Minister, said that so far 1300 sponsorship applications and 170 visa applications have been submitted. There has been a huge demand for this visa. For the first few families who have been approved, it is a matter of great joy to bring their parents to Australia. Applicants who are approved in the future too will share a similar sentiment, as quoted by SBS News

The new Parent Visa of Australia received excessive criticism due to its high visa fee. The fee for a 3-year visa was $5,000 while that for a 5-year visa was $10,000.

Mr Chetti says that even though the fee was high, this was the only visa that could have brought his mother to Australia for so long. There is a waiting period of 30 years for the Permanent Parent Visa. Even Contributory Parent Visas have a wait time of 4 to 5 years.

The new Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa allows parents of Australian PRs and citizens to live in the country for up to 5 years. The new Parent Visa can be renewed for another 5 years.

Australia will issue a maximum of 15,000 visas a year.
