Abstract: IEC has started accepting applications for the pool of 2023.

The IEC or International Experience Canada program has started accepting applications for the pool of 2023. It facilitates travel and work opportunities for international individuals.

It was announced last year that the application pool would be expanded. IEC will be accepting approximately 90,000 applications in 2023. The submission of applications has started.

The International Experience Canada program offers international work experience and exposure to youth from 36 partner countries. It facilitates eligible candidates the opportunity to gain work experience in Canada through an authorized work permit and travel in the country.

IRCC or Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada hopes that expanding the pool for the program will address workforce shortages in various sectors, especially tourism.

Functioning of the IEC program

Partner nations who have signed the Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada help in the efficient functioning of the IEC program. Youth of the partner nations are eligible for the IEC work permit. There are three primary streams through which candidates can apply. The details are given below:

Stream Benefits Validity
Working Holiday OPW or Open Work Permit to facilitate to work for any employer in multiple industries 2 years
Young Professionals Employer-specific work permit for candidates who have a job offer, and who plan to work with a single employer in Canada 2 years
International Co-op Internship Intern for a particular company of Canada NA

The program utilizes the model of Expression of interest or Invitation to apply for welcoming newcomers. Interested individuals can submit their profiles in the pool for IEC. If selected, the applicants are invited to apply for a work permit in Canada.

If the application is approved, the individual will be offered a work permit through their specific stream and can enter and work in the country during their authorized stay.

Eligibility Criteria for IEC

The eligibility criteria for the IEC program are given below:

  • Be a citizen and a valid passport holder of any of the 36 partner countries that have signed the Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada.
  • Possess a valid passport
  • Be in the eligible age group, that is, 18-35
  • Have 2,500 CAD when arriving in Canada
  • Have a valid health insurance
  • Be legally permitted in Canada
  • Have sufficient funds for the return journey from Canada
  • Dependents should not accompany the candidate
  • Pay the required fees

The expansion of the pool of the IEC program helps Canada in welcoming more newcomers. There are approximately 800,000 economic immigrants supposed to arrive in Canada in the next three years.
