Australia immigration in 2022: How to move from Dubai to Australia

By  Editor
Updated October 27 2023

It’s not uncommon for skilled and qualified individuals from Dubai who get to experience Australia to opt for Australia immigration. They do so convinced of the better opportunities to build a career as they aspire to have.

Australia immigration is preferred by those who are willing to move to Australia for the country’s higher quality of life, peaceful environment, and stable economy. Moreover, it’s easier to get an Australia PR visa compared to many other countries of the world.

Australia immigration system

Australia immigration system is a points-based system. This means that every immigration candidate is given a score based on various factors like age, work experience, education, and language skills.

The first criterion that you must meet to be eligible for Australia immigration is that you must get a score of 65 out of 100 points. Here’s a snapshot of criteria for scoring eligibility points:

Category Min. Points
Age (25-33 years) 30
Work Experience in Australia (8-10 years) 20
Work Experience outside Australia (8-10 years) 15
English proficiency (8 bands) 20
Education (outside Australia): Doctorate degree 20
Study in a regional area 5
A year of professional training in a skilled program in Australia 5
Accredited in community language 5
Subclass 190 visa (State sponsorship) 5
Niche skills such as Doctorate or Master’s degree in Australia 5

As for the occupations eligible for you to apply for to migrate to Australia, you must check the SOL (Skilled Occupation List) or the CSOL (Consolidated SOL).  You have to be working in one of the occupations present in this list to be eligible to immigrate to Australia under the Skilled Migration Program.

There are choices of visas that come under the Skilled Migration Stream. The 3 main visa categories under the Skilled Migration Program are the following:

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

To be able to apply for this visa, you must submit an EOI via SkillSelect. You can do this from Dubai. Here are the requirements to apply after getting invited:

  • You must submit an EOI
  • You must possess experience in a nominated occupation listed in Australia’s SOL
  • You must be aged below 45 years
  • You must obtain a report of skill assessment issued by a designated authority for the particular occupation
  • You must meet the basic requirements for Skilled Migration
  • You must meet character and health requirements
  • You must get a minimum score of 65 on the points test

The application must be lodged within 60 days of receiving the invitation.

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa

An Australian territory/state nominates you for this visa and you become eligible to apply for it. It’s similar to Subclass 189. The only exception is that you need to have experience in a nominated occupation present on the SOL.

Subclass 491 - Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

This visa is a replacement for Subclass 489 visa. It’s a pathway to an Australia PR visa. With this visa, you can live, study and work in Australia for 5 years as well as your family. After staying in Australia for 3 years, you will be eligible to apply for an Australia PR visa. The eligibility requirements for this visa are the same as for other visas under Skilled nomination programs.

Other recommended visa pathways

  • Migration via sponsorship by an employer in Australia
  • Business Innovation & Investment program
  • Distinguished Talent visa
  • Family Stream
