Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, has announced the joint decision by Canada and the US to prolong the border restrictions at their border till June 21. This came as part of the monthly renewal of Canada immigration’s decisions on border status with the US.

The border between both countries will stay open for essential travel only. The step to prolong the border restriction was decided upon in the interest of the health of people in both nations. The prevention of COVID-19 has been given greatest priority.

As per Canada’s definition, essential travel includes such travel that's non-optional and non-discretional. Canada has enlisted categories of people who can come in to the country. It includes:

  • International students who carried a valid study permit before March 16, 2020
  • Approved permanent residents who have been approved before March 18, 2020
  • Permanent residents
  • Canadian citizens
  • Temporary foreign workers

Immediate family members are also permitted to enter Canada from the US.
