Are you contemplating Australia PR after having spent some time in Australia for studies or temporary work? Before starting off with the process of attempting for permanent residence in Australia, you must learn about the requirements for eligibility to do apply for Australia PR.

General requirements for eligibility

Requirement in points

Australia has a points-based system of immigration according to which you will need a minimum of 65 points under the points grid. Here’s how the criteria for scoring points goes:

Age (25-33 years) 30 points
English proficiency (8 bands) 20 points
Work Experience outside Australia (8-10 years) 15 points
Work Experience in Australia (8-10 years) 20 points
Education – Doctorate degree (outside Australia) 20 points
Niche skills viz. Doctorate/Master’s degree by way of research done in Australia 10 points
Study in a regional area 5 points
A year of professional training in a skill building program in Australia 5 points
Accredited in community language 5 points
State sponsorship (Subclass 190 visa) 5 points
Skilled spouse/de facto partner (English language, age, and skills requirements to be met) 10 points
Spouse/de facto partner possessing ‘competent English’ level (No need to meet Skills requirement or age factor) 5 points
Applicants without a de facto partner/ spouse or where a spouse is an Australian PR holder or citizen 10 points

When it comes to age, you must be aged below 45 years to be eligible to apply for Australia PR.

Language Proficiency

You are required to prove that you possess a competent proficiency level in the English language.

SOL (Skilled Occupation Lists)

You are required to choose an occupation listed in the SOL that contains the currently acceptable occupations to migrate to Australia. The list of occupations gets updated regularly to reflect the Australian labor market’s changes. The 3 categories of the SOL are:

  • Regional Occupations List
  • Short-term Skilled Occupation List
  • Medium & long-term Strategic Skills List

Eligibility points requirement for PR visa

A minimum of 65 points is required for you to be eligible for Australia PR. Scoring between 80 and 85 points earns you quicker eligibility for Australia PR.

With at least 65 points, you can be eligible for the following Australia PR visas:

Subclass 189: Skilled Independent visa

This is a PR visa for foreign workers invited to immigrate to Australia because they have the skills needed by the Government of Australia. Subclass 189 allows you to live and work anywhere in Australia permanently.

The distinct features of this visa include

  • You need no sponsor or nominator.
  • You have to be formally invited to apply for this visa.
  • Your age must be under 45 years to be eligible to apply.

Subclass 190: Skilled Nominated visa

This visa lets skilled foreign workers with a nomination from Australia to live and work and study anywhere in Australia as Australia PR holders.

As with Subclass 189, it’s necessary that you receive an ITA to be eligible to apply for Subclass 190.

For both Subclass 189 and Subclass 190, you must:

  • Receive an ITA
  • Have a minimum score of 65 on the points calculator
  • Possess a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • Be in an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List
  • Submit English test scores
