Sweden declared an increase in the salary threshold for work permit applicants, which will impact both new and old applications. This change comes in response to Statistics Sweden's release of updated median figures. This increase in salary figure represents a significant rise of almost 120% in less than a year.
As per the government plan, if the threshold increases again to 35,600 SEK, applicants must make a new adjustment according to the plan. This could include negotiating salaries or seeking a position that offers compensation in line with the new threshold.
As declared on June 18th, 2024, the median salary in Sweden has been updated by 35,600 SEK per month. Similarly, the new salary threshold for work permit eligibility will be set at 28,480 SEK per month, which represents 80% of the median salary. This marks an increase from the previous threshold of 27,360 SEK per month, based on the earlier median wage of 34,200 SEK.
The Swedish government has also planned to raise the work permit threshold to 100% of the median salary, with a proposed implementation date of June 1st, 2025. To make the process easier, the Swedish government will provide a one-year grace period for work permit renewals. This grace period will be until June 1st, 2026, to provide enough time to current visa holder’s to adjust according to the new changes.
