The Govt. of Australia has been contemplating ways of managing the rising population in Melbourne and Sydney while boosting immigration to smaller cities and towns in need of more migrants. A national population policy is soon to be announced by the Federal Ministry of Australia for removing congestion from major cities.

The Govt. is currently slowing the intake of foreign temporary workers and forcing new immigrants of Australia to settle in regional areas, as per News.com. The new population policy is set to be announced well before Australia’s election in May next year, said Population Minister Alan Tudge.

Australia had 160,000 migrants last year. A majority of them flocked to Melbourne, Sydney and Southeast Queensland. Permanent Residency Visa of Australia allows the migrants to settle and work anywhere in Australia.

One of the many possibilities being explored is the introduction of a points-based system to fast-track applications of temporary workers who head to regional areas. The Govt. is also contemplating imposing additional restrictions on where certain visa holders may live and work, said Alan Tudge

The Govt. feels that imposing the restrictions on a state-to-state basis would be simpler. The challenging task would be to force people settled in the major cities to move to regional towns. There will not be any special tax zones as per the population plan, added Mr. Tudge.
