Highlights: Ontario government set to welcome more skilled newcomers by investing an additional $25M

  • Ontario is investing additional $25 million funds over the next three years.
  • Aiming to double the number of economic migrants by 2025, i.e., up to 18,000.
  • To better tackle the labor shortage issue across various sectors and industries.
  • Additional investment in Budget 2023 aims to speed up application processing, enabling newcomers to start working in their respective industries quickly.
  • Further, enhanced security and other IT updates to support the system to handle increased demand shortly.

Ontario Budget 2023: ‘Building Stronger Ontario’

As per the latest update, the Ontario government is infusing more funds into the Ontario Immigrant Nomine Program (OINP) with an aim to:

  • Welcome over 18,000 economic immigrants by 2025
  • Address labour market shortages
  • Speed up application processing
  • Enable newcomers to start working without unwanted delay
  • Improve the processing system to handle the increased number of applications better
  • To build more highways, schools, hospitals, and homes for ever-growing population needs

Apart from an additional investment of $25 million in the Ontario Immigrant Nomine Program (OINP), the Ontario government has pledged various other measures as well in its Budget 2023, which includes:

  • Investing $75 million in Skills Development and Training Fund: To transform Ontario’s skilled trades and apprenticeship system and help new immigrants and job use their skills better.
  • Investing $224 million over two years in its New Capital Stream under Skills Development Fund: For enhanced access to all its training centers to train more workers in the skills trades and related in-demand occupations.
