Industry body NASSCOM has said that the decision of the government of Australia to eliminate the Subclass 457 visas is unlikely to have a major influence on the visas approved for the IT workers from India. In a statement issued to the press, NASSCOM said that the move was surprising and appears to be motivated by compulsions of the domestic politics. Of late the issue of immigration had emerged as a big concern in debates centered on existing geopolitical ambiance in Australia, added the statement. In order to address the issue of unemployment in Australia, the government had announced the abolition of Subclass 457 visas. This visa will now be replaced with a new category of visa which will have fresh eligibility requirements, quotes the Times of India. The Subclass 457 visas permitted companies to hire overseas workers for a maximum period of four years in a profile that has the skills shortage in Australia. NASSCOM also said that it will be working in close collaboration with governments of Australia and India to appreciate the changes that have been made effective to the visas. It would also ensure that the changes are flawlessly implemented to make sure that the Australian customers have continuity of business. The initial assessment has revealed that the changes to the visas should not have a major effect on the visa approvals for IT workers from India. The reason for this was that the Subclass 457 visas catered to diverse fields and was becoming tough to manage, added the industry body. The new visa program could have increased paperwork and lead times explained NASSCOM. It also was a policy change and an evolutionary change that has been made effective by the Government of Australia added the industry body.
