Australia is all set to introduce a new points system in November this year. Under the new points system, single applicants get extra points. Many singles are, thus, eagerly waiting for the new Australian points system.

  1. Vijay Kumar, a student at the Macquarie University, is ready to file his Permanent Residence Visa. He is an editor by profession and has a positive qualification assessment from VETASSESS, one of Australia’s Skills Assessment provider. However, Vijay wants to wait until November to file his PR application. Being single will grant him an additional 10 points which will increase his score.

Like Vijay, many single applicants are looking forward to earning an extra 10 points from November onwards.

The Immigration Dept. announced a new points system in April this year. The new points system will be effective from November 2019.

As per the new points system, applicants who do not have a spouse or common-law partner will get an extra 10 points. The current points system gives an edge to married applicants. They can claim points for Spouse Skills.

Immigration experts believe that that new points system will encourage more skilled migrants to move to Australia. The “extra points” to single applicants will help discourage unskilled partners who come with married skilled immigrants. Non-skilled partners take up visa places which could otherwise be filled by skilled migrants. Married applicants with kids also take up more visa places.

The new points system has been introduced on the recommendation of the Productivity Commission.  The Commission noted that 50% of Australia’s immigration intake consists of secondary applicants. Many of these applicants often have limited skills.

The Productivity Commission issued a report in 2016 recommending amendments to the points system. It said that skilled secondary applicants should be able to make a significant contribution to the primary applicant’s score.

Dilip Kumar, an automobile mechanic from Karnataka, is also waiting for the new points system. Since his IELTS score is not very high, the extra 10 points will contribute immensely to his overall score.

Some people have even postponed their marriages to be able to claim the extra points, as per SBS News.

The new points system will also award 10 extra points to those who have a skilled spouse or common-law partner. The spouse or common-law partner should have a positive Skills Assessment Report for that. Married applicants can also get another 5 points if their partner has competent English.
