The General Skilled Migration Scheme of Australia is not an open system. There is an occupation ceiling in place to protect the job opportunities for Australians or to meet high demands.

The occupational ceiling is the allocation of visa places for individual occupations. It is basically, the maximum number of skilled immigrants allowed under a particular occupation in the GSM scheme.

The occupation ceiling for the year 2018-19 has already been announced by the Dept. of Home Affairs.

Trade-related occupations are in high demand, as per SBS. There is also a high demand for occupations like Livestock farming, Nursing, and Civil Engineering.

The occupation ceiling applies to skilled migration programs in the Subclass 189, 190, and 489 Visas.

Visa seekers may check the number of places available for their occupation in Skill Select. However, it is most important that you receive an invite to apply for a Visa.

An invitation is nothing but permission from the Govt. allowing you to apply for a Visa under the GSM scheme.

If the occupation ceiling has been reached for a particular occupation, invites will not be issued. You may score the highest points and yet not receive an invite if the quota is full.

Due to a high volume of applications, Accountants and IT professionals need a high score to get an invite. Trade occupations, on the other hand, receive a lesser number of applications. Hence, the chances of getting an invite in a Trade occupation are higher.

In 2017, Australia’s immigration intake saw a 10-year low. It took in 20,000 lesser migrants than it did in 2016. There was a cut of 8,000 visa places in the Family Visas. Skilled Visas saw a cut of 12,468 places.
