Italy is granting 10,000 additional Caregiver Work Visas to target the country's shortage of caregivers. Caregivers usually look after the elderly and disabled. The government also declared on Wednesday that it has adopted a new package of migration rules.
To solve the issue of an aging population and increasing birth rate, Italy has long faced caregivers for a long time. The extra quote for caregivers added up to the 452,000 work visa numbers announced for the 2023-2025 period last year, representing an increase of nearly 150% from the previous three years.
The new policy has also introduced stricter rules for anti-fraud safeguards of the visa system to avoid excessive fraud in the process.
In 2025, tougher checks would apply to applications from countries deemed to be at higher risk of fraud, namely Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
