It’s expected that the demand for immigrants to join the workforce to fill vacant jobs will skyrocket in 2021. This will happen as companies resume operations and their employees, who work in Canada begin to retire or quit their jobs in exceeding numbers compared to 2020.

This was stated by eminent economist Andrew Agopsowicz. He observed that far lesser people were ready to leave their jobs while the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height in Canada. He also revealed that the uncertainty in the labor market during the COVID-19 pandemic led to a huge reduction in job exits that were voluntary.

Now that the economy is bouncing back, many people are reviewing their options to work in Canada. They are choosing to quit or retire from their jobs. These activities are starting to get back to levels seen before the COVID-19 crisis.

The present situation

Here are some facts and figures that will depict the recent developments on the employment front:

  • Just in June 2021, close to 3 times the workers quit their work in Canada (16,700) in comparison to the same month in 2020.
  • In the second half of 2021, Andrew figures that 125,000 workers in Canada will possibly retire.
  • Compounding that, there’s a growing number of job vacancies coming to 550,000 in Q1 of 2021

What does it mean for Canada immigration?

Given this situation, there’s abundant opportunity for foreign workers who nurture the hope to go for Canada immigration under various economic programs.

Immigration programs like GTS and TFWP are quick solutions for Canadian employers affected by labor shortages. Under these programs, the processing of Canadian visa applications and work permits is done within 2 weeks.

Andrew has also noted a significant pressure building on the labor market. This may be felt in industries that have returned to employment levels before the pandemic crisis started.

Update on Canada’s international travel restrictions

Canada is all set to reopen its borders to international travel for non-essential purposes on September 7, 2021. This will be done if the COVID-19 cases remain low. Until that happens, it’s unlikely that immigration will become a quick solution for employers to solve their labor shortage.

As per Andrew, with growing shortages, Canada will be compelled to urgently focus on new and under-utilized labor sources including immigration, visible minorities, and women. However, these won’t be offering much relief in the short-run in the labor situation.
