Updated November 01 2023

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) was the primary immigration gateway for the skilled workers to return to Canada between its establishment in 1967 and the beginning of the pandemic. In continuation to a temporary hold that has been started since December 2020, the invitations from Express Entry rounds for the candidates of FSWP are ready to resume in the month of July.

The FSWP is a practical immigration pathway for the candidates who can be eligible without any experience and job offer from Canada.

Following are the 4 ways to apply for the Canadian immigration via FSWP:

  1. Meet the eligibility criteria of FSWP

To be eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the potential candidates need to meet the basic requirements for language ability, education, and work. The minimum score under the program’s 100-point grid is 67.

FSWP grid

Factors Points
Education Up to 25
Language Skills Up to 28
Work Experience Up to 15
Age Up to 12
Arranged employment Up to 10
Adaptability Up to 10
  1. Express Entry profile must be submitted to the IRCC website

As soon as you are directed to the government website, create a secure IRCC account and follow the given instructions. The tool that is provided online will ask you to create an Express Entry profile and enter your reference code (if you have one) along with your details.

You will be given 60 days to complete and submit your Express Entry profile; else, you will have to restart it.

Once you’ve finished entering the information on your profile, you will be able to submit it, and the IRCC will tell you which Express Entry program you can apply for.

If you are eligible for the FSWP, the IRCC will allow you to enter the Express Entry pool and the other qualified individuals. You will acquire a score based on the factors such as age, education, work experience, and professional language ability.

  1. Look for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence

Filling out an Express Entry profile online doesn’t assure that you will be sent an invitation to apply for permanent residence. You must have a high score required to meet the basic threshold in an Express Entry draw.

  1. Apply for immigration if you receive an ITA

If you get an Invitation to Apply, automatically, the system invites immigration candidates to register themselves under one of the programs that are managed under the Express Entry in the given order: Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), FSWP, and then Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

There are alternate ways to immigrate

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a vital immigration program under which Canada targets more than 80,000 PNP candidates as permanent residents each year in the coming three years, on the 2022-2024 Immigration report Levels Plan. Also, the IRCC is continuing to conduct Express Entry draws in every two weeks for PNP immigration candidates.

Bottom line

The FSWP has been a significant way to grab the attention of immigrants to Canada since 1967. Even though the FSWP has been disturbed by the pandemic, the reports by the World Education Services suggest that the interest to migrate to Canada is as powerful as ever.
