The US has been improving its situation around immigration since Donald Trump left the Presidential position. After all, in all its glory, US immigration has been the favorite path for technology professionals to build a career and a promising future. Until the doors were closed on migration under Trump, visas like H1B were bringing skilled tech professionals to the US to make an impact and set industry rolling.

Lately, the trends have changed again as the numbers indicate. The US has issued a higher number of H1B visas in 2021 than in 2020 corresponding to the rise in demand for talents in technology. Here are the approval rates for applications for H1B visas in 2021 so far:

  • Approval rates till June 2021 - 98.1%
  • Approval rates in Q1 of 2021 – 97%

These rates were around 84% in 2018 and 2019 during Trump’s presidency. So, the higher rates are indeed encouraging to hear about if you are interested in H1B.

The developments

Here are some distinct developments that happened in this context in the US since Biden took over as President.

  • Lesser Request for Evidence (RFE) and a higher rate of visa approvals
  • Reinstatement of the deference policy
  • The decision that was taken with the ITServe alliance

All these have created a better environment for legal immigration in the past 6 months.

The talk around H1B

Every year, the US issues 65,000 H1B visas. For those who have got a Master’s degree, the country issues another 20,000 H1B visas.

But lately, there has been a call for overhauling the visa process. There is a push for removing the lottery system. There’s also a call for overhauling the visa processing system that requires employers to apply for visas before the deployment of the person concerned.

The giving away of the lottery system to allowing the employers in the US to file an application anytime during the year could be a good idea. That’s also because of the labor shortage that exists in the US.
