Let’s quickly go through the topic of what it takes to impress the authorities while giving your essay writing to apply to study in USA in the country’s colleges.

The writing component, called “essays”, is integral to the process of going ahead with the US Application form aiming for admission in US colleges. The common practice is that each college will task you with a large essay and few college-specific essays. The topics for the large essay are available through application systems like the Common App, Coalition). The essay part is important while going to study overseas in the USA.

If you have a list of 12 colleges, you would require to write 24 to 30 essays. Each essay will have a word count from 100 to 650 words.

When the admission officers at a college evaluate your essays, they make out your personality and your possible contribution level to the campus by reading between the lines. Your essay is your voice and opinions communicated. You give out what your values are and what your attitude and preferences are.

Every year or in 2 years, prompts for the common application and Coalition application are updated. If you write an essay for any of these prompts, your options are to either adapt it or make it short for other popular applications. An example is the University of California system’s essays.

The best part about essays is that your essay will always be unique as the way you perceive a certain thing or how you react to it will be unique in itself.

International students often find it difficult to deal with the number of essays needed coupling with the need for original content and meeting deadlines. But if you create specific timelines for your essays, you won’t face much difficulty to keep track.

Here are some tips to write your essays for admission application in US colleges.

  • Narrate your own story
  • Receive feedback
  • Refine, check the spelling, and proofread
  • Make sure your essays communicate the diversity of thought
  • Let your essays show facets of your personality unrevealed anywhere else in your application.
  • End the essay on a positive note giving hope.

“Now” is the time to begin practicing your essay writing skills. Use the time that the pandemic has left you with and start exploring the ways to write original, impactful, and error-free essays.

Broadly, there are 2 categories of essays:

  • Personal stories that reflect your ethos
  • “Why this college” type essay that tells with justification why you chose the particular college and its course.

Before you start with writing an essay, brainstorm and pen your thoughts. Here are some questions to ask your friends and family to help you move in the right direction:

  • What is the best thing about me?
  • What is the most unusual thing about me?
  • What is the worst thing about me?
  • What was your initial impression of me and how has that changed?
  • How would you describe me to someone who doesn't know me?

Also, you may practice writing essays of 200-250 words on the following:

  • A person you admire
  • If you had to describe your family in one word, what would that be?
  • An experience that altered your viewpoint
  • A quotation that sums up your aspirations
  • An incident whose memory still makes you laugh
