The new occupation list for skilled immigrant intake programs for 2017-18 has been announced by Australia. The new list of occupations will be effective from 1 July 2017, as quoted by the SBS. Overseas immigrant applicants for general skilled immigration will be required to choose a qualified occupation from the Long-term Strategic and Medium Skills list. Overseas applicants of Australia visas in the below-mentioned categories can choose an occupation from the Long-term Strategic and Medium Skills list:
  • Skilled Independent 189 Subclass visas
  • Skilled Regional 489 Subclass visas (Applicants must not have been nominated by a Territory or State government in Australia)
  • Temporary Graduate 489 Subclass visas
There are 178 occupations in the new Long-term Strategic and Medium Skills list that can be chosen for skilled immigration to Australia. The list of qualified skilled occupations has been reduced by 12 occupations. Out of these nine occupations were qualified for 186 and 457 visas as of 19 April 2017. Several occupations have now been added to the lists of some visa programs. Additionally, some occupations have been shuffled between the MLTSSL and STSOL. The Consolidated Skilled Occupation List in Australia was replaced by Temporary Skilled Occupation List in April 2017. The overseas applicants of the below visas must select an occupation from the Temporary Skilled Occupation List:
  • Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa
  • Subclass 489 Skilled Regional Provisional visa
  • Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa
  • Subclass 457 Temporary Skilled worker visa
