The best and the brightest in the world in several areas can begin to apply for the UK skilled worker visa under the new points-based UK immigration system from January 1, 2021.

The Tier 2 visa with a new look that will be a part of the post-Brexit UK immigration system will be launched on January 1, 2021.

The UK’s new immigration system will be points-based. This means points will be assigned for a job offer to ascertain a certain skill level achieved for that role. Also graded will be the level of English of a non-UK national. A minimum level of salary will also be stipulated and ensured being paid.

The new immigration rules will make sure that businesses in the UK can recruit international candidates chosen to work in UK are the most qualified for the job offered. This is necessary for the UK to keep its economy progressing and the country at the forefront of innovation.

Priti Patel, the UK Home Secretary, has stated that the policy of ending free movement between the EU and the UK after Brexit will help Britain take back control of the country’s borders. It will also help the UK to implement a points-based immigration system.

She has also highlighted the major advantage of a points-based system that will guarantee that employers will get to recruit the right workers with the right skills desired. The employers will be motivated and in a better position to invest in their workforce and train them effectively.

The minimum salary stipulated for the candidates chosen via the new Skilled Worker stream will be £25,600 per year. This amount will be £20,480 if:

  • The job applicant has a Ph.D., or
  • The job applied for is listed on the Shortage Occupation List

The UK government gives a period of 3 weeks for a decision to be made on the application.
