An HR professional’s journey from Australia to Canada

When I was young, I never dreamed of relocating to another country.

 Now in 2022

I am describing my experience to you from Canada’s largest city – Toronto. I work at a hospitality company as its recruitment head.

I worked for five years in Australia in talent acquisition after I moved out of India, my native country. In my last role as an HR Business Analyst, I got know insights into the business by evaluating HR data and providing reports with insights to aid businesses in driving their growth.

In the last two years, my work duties expanded, and I lost my time. I wanted to settle down and maintain a healthy work-life balance. My uncle has been living in Canada for years now with his family. He told me how I could live life on my own terms there.

 Better opportunities

At first, I wanted to go to Canada to pursue higher studies. I am a music buff who always wanted to pursue an offbeat course by completing a degree or diploma course in it. The practical person within me decided to migrate to Canada for work. So, I began researching the immigration process of Canada.

The groundwork

I needed to find time to prepare for my IELTS exam as it was hectic at my workplace. I wanted to quit my job and focus on it. But would I be able to look after myself financially?

My brothers said they would support me. They told me to seek assistance from an immigration consultant. After some research, I decided I would take the help of Y-Axis.

I called them up. After listening to me, they briefly told me about the process. I was impressed with the way they handled things, so I decided to go ahead with the immigration process through Y-Axis. I had a Zoom call in which I had a face-to-face interaction with the consultants. They also mentioned about Y-Jobs, a separate division of the company that helps people find jobs abroad.

They gave me tips to polish my resume. They act as intermediaries between job seekers and organizations on their website.

Work Visa for Canada

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issue Canadian work visas under various programs. One was the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which helps Canadian employers hire migrant workers to mitigate labor market shortages. The program ensures that migrants as workers obtain the rights they deserve when they are employed in Canada.

Under TFWP, Canada hires high-skilled workers, low-skilled workers, Global Talent Stream (GTS), and others. Together with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), it is the responsibility of IRCC to ensure that international workers take up jobs only that cannot be filled by the citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Employers of this North American country need to apply for Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire overseas workers.

ESDC issues to the employees the LMIA documents that allow them to recruit international workers through the TFWP. In case you have got a job, your employer gets to process your LMIA within two weeks.

Before submitting your work permit application, procure from your employer the documents, like a job offer letter and a copy of an LMIA. In certain provinces, migrant workers may need to qualify for applying under the non-LMIA programs like the International Mobility Program. This program offers numerous options for temporary workers, allowing employers to recruit workers without an LMIA.

After my profile qualified for the work visa of Canada, Y-Axis began my visa process.

Conclusion

Canadians are known for their multicultural diversity, work-life balance, and laidback lifestyle. The country also ranks #1 on quality of living and in the top five globally on sustainability, entrepreneurship, and economic influence.

I am glad to be in a country where my colleagues have been accommodating at the workplace. Whenever I am free, I spend time at my uncle’s place. I have even planned to pursue a part-time course in music.

As per the 2022-2022 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada has set a target of inviting 832,000 migrants to the country.
