 Different Canada Work Permit Visa

Canada work permits are of 3 types:

  • Open work permits
  • Employer-specific work permits
  • Temporary work permits

Open work permits

Open work permits let you work in Canada for any employer. The only exception for employers is that they:

  • Mustn’t be listed as ineligible
  • Mustn’t be offering adult entertainment services

You may get an open Canada work permit if you.

  • Are international students who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for the PGWP
  • Are you a student unable to meet the costs of your studies?
  • Have a work permit that’s employer-specific and are being abused or are at risk of being used in the place of your job in Canada.
  • have applied for a Canada PR visa
  • Are you a dependent family member of an individual who has applied for a Canada PR visa
  • Are the common-law partner/spouse of an international student or skilled worker
  • Are the common-law partner/spouse of an individual who has applied for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
  • are a refugee claimant/refugee, protected person, or their family member
  • are the holder of a temporary resident permit
  • are under an unenforceable removal order
  • are young workers taking part in special programs

Employer-specific work permits

This type of Canadian work permit lets you work in Canada, adhering to the conditions of the work permit drawn with an employer. These include:

  • How long you can work
  • The name of the employer in Canada you can work for
  • The location of work (where applicable)

International Student Work Eligibility

International students can get a Canada work permit while studying there.

You may work on your school campus once your study program commences in Canada. You must have a valid study permit and a SIN (Social Insurance Number) to be eligible. Besides this, you must be a post-secondary student doing full-time study at a:

  • Public post-secondary school viz. A university, a college, a trade/technical school, or CEGEP in Quebec
  • private post-secondary school in Quebec operating under the same rules as Quebec’s public schools
  • Private/public secondary or post-secondary institution in Quebec that offers qualifying programs of a duration of 900 hours or more leading to a DVS (a diploma of vocational studies) or an AVS (attestation of vocational specialization)
  • Canadian private schools can legally award degrees under provincial law, but under the condition that the student is enrolled in a study program that leads to an authorized degree as deemed by the province. This may include only some study programs on offer at the private institutions.

An international student can also work off-campus. For this, the employer must ensure that you, as a student, can do so without a Canadian work permit. In this case, you must commence your studies in Canada before going to work.

If the study permit allows you to work off-campus without a Canada work permit, you can do so provided:

  • you’ve started studying
  • you’re a full-time student at a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
  • you have procured enrolment in either of the following
  • a post-secondary academic, vocational, or professional training program
  • a secondary-level vocational training program (only in Quebec)
  • your study program
  • leads to a degree, certificate, or diploma
  • is at least six months long
  • you have a SIN (Social Insurance Number)

As an international student, you can work up to 20 hours per week while attending regular classes. During school breaks, you can work full-time.
