The Dept. of Home Affairs has confirmed that the wait time for Australian Citizenship applications has dropped. As per the Dept. the number of immigrants who have been granted citizenship has also doubled in comparison to last year.

The wait time for Australian citizenship applications has dropped by 10% as per data released by the Dept. of Home Affairs.

75% of the applications have seen a drop in the processing times from 20 months to 18 months. This is calculated from the time the citizenship application is lodged to the citizenship ceremony (conferral).

However, for 90% of the applications, there is no change in the processing times. The processing time is still 23 months for these applications, as per SBS News.

The Dept. says that it had introduced a host of reforms which it attributes to the reduction in wait times.

The number of Australian citizenships granted between 1st July 2018 and 30th April 2019 is double the number of applications approved in the same duration last year.

Despite the reduction in wait times, there is still a long queue of pending citizenship approvals. As per the Dept. of Home Affairs, there were 221,859 pending applications as of 26th May 2019. However, the Dept. says that the backlog has reduced as compared to the 250,000 pending applications last year.

A spokesperson from the Dept. of Home Affairs said that the Dept. is currently focusing on the Australian Citizenship program. Due to the high level of focus, the wait time is expected to reduce further.
