US-Canada border closure extended

US and Canada to keep border closed for another month

US-Canada border closure extended

The closure of the US-Canada border has been on for some time now since the COVID-19 hit the nations in March 2020. Now, it’s been announced that Canada’s southern border will stay closed until October 21, 2020. This is, yet again, in an effort to stop the spread of the pandemic.

So, non-essential travel between the US and Canada will stay banned, as confirmed by Bill Blair, the Minister of Public Safety in Canada. US citizens will need a very essential purpose to travel to Canada as a result of this step. Essential travel includes:

  • People crossing the border to do essential work like health emergencies
  • Trade shipments via trucks and railways
  • Citizens of Canada and PR of the USA and their immediate family members crossing the border to reunite

The definition of immediate family includes children, parents/step-parents, and spouses/common-law partners.

This is the sixth time the border closure has been extended. The main reason for such extended closure is that the number of COVID-19 cases in the US is quite high compared to that in Canada.

In all, Canada has had 15% of its population tested. The Canadian government is constantly urging its people to follow the recommendations of the public health authorities. The preventive steps towards COVID-19 include avoiding crowded places and maintaining physical distance along with the use of masks.

Canada has also concern over a recent surge of COVID-19 daily cases across the country. The fear of a second wave following the increase to 900 cases per day, could even trigger a lockdown.

But the US is also not taking chances with the COVID-19 crisis. US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that bans new temporary workers willing to work in USA and Green Card holders from entering the country. This also includes H-1B visa holders.

The move is also said to be a step towards ensuring that American citizens who lost jobs due to the pandemic will be able to find employment.

But Canada has taken the opposite route by keeping its immigration draws active and welcoming immigrants and temporary foreign workers. This has even prompted many who had an interest in immigration to the US to reconsider and choose Canada instead. Immigration from the US to Canada is increasing as they don’t feel confident about their immigration status in the USA.

Canada continues to hold regular Express Entry draws. It was on September 16, 2020, that IRCC invited 4,200 immigration candidates to apply for provincial nomination.
