Trains could be stopped between Italy and Switzerland

There’s a possibility for suspension of cross-border train services between Switzerland and Italy in the week to come. This is owing to the dearth of staff to perform the essential COVID-19 safety checks.

The suspension could result in:

  • Many daily routes getting affected
  • Cancellation of long-distance trains between Italy, Milan, and Frankfurt
  • Hinder travel via regional trains that are used by many workers to cross the border from Northern Italy to Switzerland on a daily basis

The rising rate of COVID-19 cases with the second wave of the pandemic has made Italian authorities take new safety measures for those arriving on a travel visa. This includes keeping trains running with restrictions as it was during the first wave.

Though Italy didn’t ban train travel altogether, the manpower needed to implement the preventive measures for COVID-19 fell short.

Banning ski-breaks and restricting travel between areas and municipalities over the coming festive season of Christmas and New Year is in the plans of Italy.

Some earlier measures by Italy

  • Air Italia, the Italian airline, and Delta Air Lines, the US airline, decided to run quarantine-free flights from the US to Italy.
  • All passengers from EU member states, the UK, and the Schengen states must present a negative COVID-19 test result, not older than 48 hours, to get entry into Italy.

The Swiss Federal Council has updated Switzerland’s travel quarantine measures. It has announced several more steps to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s best to know about them before making a visa application.
