General Eligibility Criteria for All Skills in Demand Visa Applicants 

Regardless of the pathway, all applicants must meet these baseline requirements: 

 

1. Nomination by an Approved Sponsor 

You must be nominated by an Australian employer who is registered as a sponsor with the Department of Home Affairs. 

 

2. Skills & Qualifications 

You must have the skills, qualifications, and experience required for the nominated role. This may include: 

  • Formal education (degree, diploma, or certificate) 
  • Relevant work experience (minimum 1 year for most roles) 
  • Licensing or registration (if required for the occupation) 

 

3. English Language Proficiency 

You must meet minimum English language standards: 

  • IELTS score of 5.0 overall (with no band below 5.0) for most roles 
  • Higher scores may be required for healthcare, education, or PR pathways 

 

4. Health & Character Requirements 

  • Pass a medical examination 
  • Provide police clearance certificates 
  • Meet Australia’s character standards

Core Skills Pathway: Most Popular Route 

The Core Skills Pathway is designed for skilled workers in occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which includes over 450 roles across healthcare, construction, IT, education, and more.

Location  Must work in designated regional areas 
Salary  Lower thresholds may apply

Special Conditions & Exemptions 

  • Age: Unlike many skilled visas, age under 45 years is no longer mandatory in most cases under the SID visa. 
  • Existing Visa / Onshore Applicants: If you are already in Australia on another visa, you often need to hold a substantive visa or certain bridging visas, and comply with conditions of your current visa 
  • Previous Visa Compliance: Good track record helps in processing. Usually assessed.

Pros and Cons of Skills in Demand visa
