The State government of West Australia has reduced the number of jobs eligible for the skilled immigration list to 18. Previously the list had as much as 178 jobs that included nurses, engineers, and bricklayers and was revised on the very first day of the Labor government in March 2017. Mark McGowan the Prime Minister said that the 18 jobs that have been retained in the skilled immigration list were predominantly in the health industry. These include several classes of registered nurses, psychiatrists, and midwives that were genuinely required by the healthcare sector, added McGowan. The existing economic ambiance in West Australia is not conducive to give priority to immigrants above the local Australians, elaborated the Prime Minister as quoted by the Perthnow. As of now it is important to enhance the job opportunities for the local West Australians, explained McGowan. The policy of the government will ensure that as and when possible the local talents will be given preference in the local job market. It is unwise to hire overseas workers for jobs when local workers are efficient to be employed in these jobs, added Mark McGowan. Elaborating on the economy of West Australia Mark said that the economic scenario has transformed drastically ever since the peak of the boom in the mining sector and all possible efforts will be made to bring back West Australians to jobs. It was also confirmed by McGowan that Perth was being removed as the region from the regional sponsored immigration program which was an extra pathway to obtain a work visa for overseas immigrant workers.
