Regional Australia demands more skilled immigrants

Regional Australia has demanded more numbers of skilled immigrants to cater to the scarcity of workers. A group of community and business leaders have in fact demanded changes to Australia Visas that mandate skilled immigrants to reside in Regional areas and smaller cities. This will also ease pressure on Melbourne and Sydney and create opportunities for other cities.

Jodie van Deventer the CEO of Committee for Adelaide said that there is no issue with the rapid growth of population in Australia. But the real issue is with the distribution of the population, she added.

Ms. Deventer said that it is absurd to cut immigrant numbers to Sydney and Melbourne. Instead, these must be diverted towards cities such as Adelaide. Majority of the regional areas in Australia are struggling with a shortage of skilled workers, added the CEO.

Australia must evolve a strategy for decentralization of population said Jodie van Deventer, as quoted by the Australian. Visa conditions that mandate immigrants to reside in Darwin, Hobart, or Adelaide can be considered, she added.

The Committee for Adelaide CEO said that the strategies for redistribution of the population must not be implemented in isolation. Visas that mandate immigrants to reside in regional Australia must also ensure that there is genuine harmonization of demands and resources. Immigrants must be aligned with appropriate job opportunities so that do not move elsewhere to find jobs, she added.
