Overview:

A record high of roughly 71,275 new permanent residents is said to be invited by Quebec immigration this year. The province primarily focuses on the immigrants, up more than 41.7 percent of the 50,285 who could not come last year because of the dreadful pandemic.

Highlights:

  • A limit of 52,500 permanent residents permitted according to the multi-year plan
  • 18,775 permanent residents from 2020 were added to the allotment for this year
  • Quebec expects an increase in roughly 30,000 temporary foreign workers
  • Top occupations in Quebec
  • Ottawa is willing to welcome 431,645 permanent residents this year

The Parti Quebecois opposition party has initiated a colossal move due to the massive pressure from the industry and business groups to increase the targets of Quebec’s immigration exponentially. The Quebec Immigration Minister Jean Boulet mentioned that this year’s immigration increase is to get to the level of the losses caused during the pandemic.

Quebec immigration couldn’t reach the target of 18,775 permanent residents in 2020

“Every year, a limit of 52,500 permanent residents are allowed, depending on the multi-year plan that limits the number of immigrants,” mentioned Jean Boulet in French.

Quebec could not welcome 44,000 new permanent residents under the multi-year plan in 2020. Instead, only 25,225 new permanent residents arrived in Quebec that year.

The 18,775 permanent residents who could not come in 2020 are now being added to the allotment for this year.

The Immigration Minister expects a higher number of Temporary Foreign Workers

Quebec expects an increase in roughly 30,000 temporary foreign workers with a work experience in the province from last year.

Earlier this month, Quebec’s industry and business groups demanded the province double the immigration to resolve and meet the needs of labor shortages.

According to the reports of the Industrial groups, Quebec is said to invite 80,000 immigrants each year.

“It is essential to inform the political parties about the necessity to implement solid strategies to increase the pool of workers and maintain the competitive advantage before the Quebec provincial election is scheduled to be conducted on October 3rd, 2022.

Parti Québécois to restraint the increase in immigration Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon

“The society of Quebec must decide the about the immigration and answer by itself, whether or not the increase in immigration will generate more wealth and increase the per capita GDP,” said Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.

The leader of Parti Québécois tried to restrain immigration earlier in February.

Ottawa is willing to welcome 431,645 permanent residents this year, 447,055 next year, and 451,000 in 2024, according to the 2022-2024 Levels Plan released by the federal government. St-Pierre Plamondon sent a letter to Quebec Premier François Legault, asking him if the province had been informed about the new immigration targets of Canada.

In the letter that was sent, the leader of Parti Québécois warned that the increase in immigration could affect Quebec’s strike on the national political scene.
