Overseas pilots have been offered 2-year work visas in order to address the shortage of pilots in Australia. The scarcity of pilots has threatened cancellation of several flights in Australia. From January 2018 overseas pilots will once again have access to 2-year work visas. Peter Dutton the Immigration Minister has confirmed the changes in rules for overseas pilots. This was revealed by Regional Aviation Association of Australia. It is now lobbying for extending the 2 year period to 4 years, as quoted by the SBS. Mike Higgins the CEO of Regional Aviation Association of Australia said that this will attract foreign pilots to the nation. However, much needs to be offered to appeal to senior pilots with a growing family. A 4 year period will be more appealing to them, added Higgins. Large international flight operators have passed on the trickledown effect, said the CEO. This includes Emirates and Etihad. These were recruiting form flight operators in Australia and had to later hire from small local airlines, added Higgins. The overseas pilots would first serve a training period. They will mentor the Australian pilots, informed Mike Higgins. Anthony Albanese the Transport spokesman for the Opposition said that scarcity of pilots reflects the failure of the government. It has mismanaged the aviation sector in Australia, he added. Concetta Fierravanti-Wells the Liberal Senator accepted that there is the scarcity of pilots. But the predecessor Labor government also has a share in this issue, he added. The shortage of pilots has accumulated over the past few years, explained the Senator.
