If you are a non-EU national and have made the big decision to work in Germany for a German employer you love to work with, you will want to know how to get a Germany work permit.

Now, Germany work visa is different from Germany work permit. A work visa lets a person enter a country to live and work in a country. On the other hand, a work permit is issued by the employer in a particular country to an employee in a country overseas. With the work permit, the candidate can enter the country of the employer and proceed to work for the company that has fetched the person the permit.

The Germany work permit is issued as a German work & residence permit. You can lodge a single application for both together at the office of the German Immigration Authority. Non-EU nationals will also need to get a visa from a German consulate or embassy abroad.

Germany Work Permit Categories

  • General Work Permit: It’s for you if you have found a job in Germany that was not possible to be filled by an EU national. You only need to qualify for the job position.
  • Highly Skilled Worker Permit: It’s for you if you are a highly skilled worker with years of experience and draw a high income.
  • EU Blue Card: It’s for you if your annual salary will be at least €56,800. This will be €44,304 per annum in case you are in an occupation that has a shortage of workers in Germany.
  • Freelancer Work Permit: It’s for you if you are a self-employed individual or a freelancer with proven prospective clients.

The steps in getting a Germany work permit

If you are a non-EU national the following are the steps to follow to get a Germany work permit:

  • You must first find a job to work in Germany.
  • You must then apply for an entry visa for the purpose of employment from the German embassy.
  • You must then travel to Germany. There, you must apply for the Germany work and residence permit at the office of the German Immigration Authority.

As an alternative, you can also:

  • Lodge an application for a Germany Jobseeker visa.
  • Then find a job in Germany within 6 months.
  • Then lodge an application for a Germany work and residence permit to the office of the German Immigration Authority.
