The number of overseas students in Australia has gone up by 12% in 2018. The number continues to rise as international students make up almost a quarter of the number of enrolments in certain Universities.

Collectively, Universities in Australia, Private colleges and English Institutes have registered an enrolment of 542,054 students, as per the Dept. of Education. This is in comparison to 305,534 enrolments five years ago.

Why is Australia such a favorite among students? Australia not only has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and unspoiled nature, it also has one of the best education systems. With high-quality education and state-of-the-art Universities, it is no wonder that it attracts international students in plenty.

Another reason why studying in Australia is so attractive is because the immigration laws have provision for the Post Study Work Permit. This allows the student to work full-time after the studies are completed and to recover the expenses incurred during the course.

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has announced a hike of 3.5% in the base pay rates. The new national minimum wage is set at AUD $ 18.93 per hour or AUD $23.66 for casual workers. This has come into effect from 1st July 2018.

Like other workers in the Australian workforce, the International students also have the same rights at the workplace. Hence this hike definitely spells good news for them, as per the Australian.

The pay hike applies to employees who get their base pay rates from:

  • the current national minimum wage
  • a registered agreement
  • a modern award

The increase will not affect employees who are already getting a pay higher than the new minimum wages.
