In 2024, Japan will need more than 1 million foreign professionals to address the labor market. According to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) research, at the current pace, 5.91 million foreign people will be working in Japan in 2040, almost one million short of the foreign workforce needed to sustain the targeted average annual growth rate of 1.24%.
Foreign workers are crucial to Japan as it addresses the country's economy and will help to fill the labor shortage gap. As of October last year, the number of foreign workers in Japan increased more in the past 15 years to 2.05 million, or about 3% of the entire workforce.
The Japanese government has also expanded work visa permits to several blue-collar sectors and skilled jobs, easing public opinions on accepting immigrant labor.
