Australian Universities are witnessing a surge of Indian and Chinese students notwithstanding the changes to 457 visas by the government. They are flocking to the universities in Australia in record numbers.

Latest statistics have revealed that around 190, 000 overseas nationals submitted applications to study in Australian Universities during July – December 2017. This is an increase of 14% when compared with the same period in 2016. The applications of Indian students to study in Australia increased by 32% and that of Chinese students by 13%.

Education has emerged as the third largest export market for Australia. The percentage of approval of student visas was 90%. One-quarter of all student visas were offered to the Chinese with 41, 000 visas. 21,000 Student visas were offered to the Indians, as quoted by the SMH. The total number of Australia Student Visas offered in 2017 increased by 7% when compared with 2016.

The rate of granting visas to Chinese applicants steadily decreased to 93.8% from 98.3% in 2017. Huge fees to study in Australia are remitted by the international students. They have become a tremendous revenue source of income for the universities. This is specifically true for the Group of Eight or GO8 Australian Universities.

The Department of Home Affairs has released the figures for Australia Student visa applications. These show that the interest of Indian and Chinese applicants in the higher education system of Australia is only enhancing.
