Immigration Agents in Australia have criticized the changes to Australian citizenship and said that test for citizenship is unattainable for several permanent residents. This has been elaborated in a submission of the Immigration Agents in Australia.
The representative body of the Immigration Agents in Australia the Migration Institute of Australia has furnished a scornful reaction to the consultation of the government of Australia. The government had asked for a response to the proposed changes to the citizenship making it tougher to become a national of Australia.
The representative body of the Immigration Agents in Australia has suggested that several proposed changes must be given up. For instance, increasing the current one-year residency requirement for citizenship of Australia to four years, as quoted by the Australia Forum.
It has been recommended by the Migration Institute of Australia that there must be transitional arrangements if citizenship changes are implemented. This must be offered to immigrants with a permanent visa from 1 year who earlier held a provisional visa for 3 years. The association has also advised that the requirement for the English language must be determined at the functional level.
The agency for Immigration Agents in Australia has suggested that there should be no separate test for the English language. Applicants who have already given evidence of proficiency in the English language in their earlier application for the visa must not be asked again to prove language ability.
The report further explains that the changes are not based on research supported by evidence and appear to be based on opinion. Neither the Discussion Paper nor the Report gives evidence that there have been issues with civic assimilation or social cohesion so far in Australia.
