The US has decided to put unused Green cards to good use by granting them to thousands of foreign health workers. These include nurses and doctors from abroad who will fill in the requirements for medical professionals.

The decision is a landmark in the efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. With the US immigration ushering in vital health care professionals to serve in an overstretched health care sector, the country will be at a great advantage.

The legislation to facilitate this was introduced in Congress by many American lawmakers. Using the Health care Workforce Resilience Act, all the unused Green cards that had approval from the Congress can be recaptured. These Green cards, thousands in number, could be issued to medical professionals from abroad.

With the current decision, the Green cards will be sent to 25,000 nurses and 15,000 doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. This will also ensure that the professionals will be present in the country to serve areas with a shortage of medical professionals.

Many health care professionals, holding H-1B or J2 visas, look for an opportunity for immigration to the USA. They will benefit from this legislation. These US work permits are granted by US companies to fetch thousands of qualified and skilled workers from abroad.

By obtaining the Green card, the chosen medical professionals will now be able to call the USA home as they become permanent residents. The Health care Workforce Resilience Act is endorsed by organizations like:

  • The Physicians for American Healthcare Access
  • America's Essential Hospitals
  • The Bipartisan Policy Center
  • The American Organization for Nursing Leadership
  • The American Hospital Association
  • The American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment
  • The US Chamber of Commerce
  • The Healthcare Leadership Council
  • The American Medical Association
