Every year thousands of foreign workers choose to migrate to Australia. It’s because of the employment opportunities and the lifestyle that Australia offers.

The most popular route for migration is the GSM (General Skilled Migration) scheme. This is a points-based system. It focuses on attracting highly skilled and experienced professionals to Australia.

One of the pre-requisites to apply under the GSM scheme is the Skill Assessment. Your Skill Assessment needs to be done as per the occupation that you nominate. Every occupation on the Skilled Occupation List has a specific Skill Assessing Authority. It is important that you get a positive Skills Assessment outcome. Only then can you apply under the GSM scheme.

Applicants should ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria before applying. Every Assessing Authority has their own set of eligibility criteria. Applicants should ensure they have the relevant qualification and experience.

Submitting relevant and complete documents is also of prime importance. The documents should substantiate your qualifications and work experience.

Applicants from the Indian community are nowadays getting more attracted to trade occupations. The most popular ones, as per SBS, are:

  • Commercial Cookery
  • Painting and Decoration
  • Automotive

The 2 most common Assessing Authorities for trade-related occupations are:

  • TRA (Trade Recognitions Australia)
  • VETASSESS (Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services)

Both these authorities assess skills gained in Australia or overseas. The assessment is often based on

  • The nominated occupation
  • Qualifications
  • Country of passport
  • The visa type that you are applying for

Including an immaculate resume in your Skill Assessment is very important. The resume should summarize your qualification in a professional way. Submitting a half-hearted resume with incomplete information is not recommended. It may lead to a delay in your Skills Assessment.

You may also submit Award Certificates, Experience letters, and Academic Transcripts. This can help support your academic qualifications.

You may also need to submit an English Language test like IELTS or PTE. But, not all Skill Assessing Authorities ask for your English language scorecard.

For work experience, you should submit

  • Payslips
  • Employer reference letters
  • Bank statements showing salary credits
  • PAYG summaries
  • Group certificate
  • Notice of assessments.
