The launch of the new EES system

According to European Commission news, the EU aims to launch the entry/Exit System (EES) in October, but the three countries are delayed as they are not ready until November. The EU commissioner will support all the member countries needed to help the operation in November.

The Commission confirmed earlier in August that the EES would become effective on November 10, stating that the launch may be postponed for another seven days to November 17 2024.

Though three countries (France, Germany, and the Netherlands) are not ready to launch the program before November, the EU authority is prepared to support these three countries and any other country facing difficulties. Even though there is a delay, the EES system will be launched this year.

What is entry/exit system (EES)?

The EU's new immigration system, the EES, is an automated system that will replace manual passport stamping. As the system launches, all foreign nationals will be required to register whether they are permitted visa-free entry to the EU.

To register in the process, foreign nationals must provide their fingerprints, facial images, and other personal information, such as the data listed in the travel document.

As soon as the information is provided, a profile will be created, and data will be stored in a database for three years. This data will then be used to register the entry and exit of non-EU citizens into the country that will:

  • Detect over-stayers
  • Prevent irregular migration
  • Identify individuals using fake identities, among other things
