Details of Canada reducing the number of temporary residents:

As per the recent plan, Canada has planned to reduce the number of temporary residents to 5% of the population, down to the current 6.2%.

 

As of 2024, the government said there is a total number of 2.5 million temporary residents, proportional to one million in 2021.

 

The country relies heavily on temporary foreign workers to fill labor shortages. As per the new policy, from 1st May 2024, Canadian businesses will have to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers and have a shorter window to prove that a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen cannot fill these jobs.

Changes made to temporary residency:

There are two expectations rules to work in construction and healthcare sectors facing a labor shortage in Canada, until 31st August, the workers are allowed to enter the country at the current level.

 

According to the Canadian Statistics, the majority of temporary residents have:

 

  • 40% of work permit
  • 22% of temporary residents
  • 18% of Asylum claimants

 

For the next two years, a limit on several international students admitted will be set, resulting to  a plan of decreasing the study permit to 35% among approved adults.

 

In 2022, over 800,000 international students were in Canada, more than 214,000 a decade earlier.
