Considering the inability of people to arrive from the US to Canada to meet their family crossing the border due to travel restrictions, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has made a significant announcement. It concerns finding ways to help immigration Canada make cross border travel more permissible on humane grounds.
He stated that Canada is attempting at finding solutions to ease these travel restrictions imposed currently. He was speaking at a COVID-19 briefing on May 29, 2020.
From March 20, 2020, Canada and the US had mutually agreed to close their borders. They agreed only allow essential travel between the countries. This was to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection. It had placed Canada immigration on a perfect defensive position against the pandemic.
There have been 2 extensions in these restrictions till now after the initial 30-days of implementation. The most recent extension happened on May 20, 2020.
Considering the importance of their work and purpose of travel, the travel restrictions have been lifted for a few people like:
- Workers in fields that are essential like food supply and agriculture
- Immediate family members of Canadians and permanent residents of Canada. These include those traveling for non-discretionary or non-optional purposes
The immediate family members include:
- Common-law partners
- Dependent children
Canadian PM Justin Trudeau expressed his hope in the COVID-19 briefing that a resolution could be reached at to help family members travel across the border to meet their loved ones.
Amidst concerns expressed by provincial premiers about lifting the travel restrictions, few were also considering it implemented with care on grounds of compassion.
The assuring part of Trudeau’s statements was that the federal and provincial governments are exploring more possibilities to ease the restrictions. It also means that any plan that’s put into action will keep the safety and security of the people of Canada as the priority.
