There are different types of visas that can get you to Canada. It's a land of opportunity for students and workers alike. In fact, the opportunities to get a permanent residence in Canada via a Canada PR visa is very high. Thanks to Canada’s immigration programs like Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program, skilled workers get deserving opportunities in Canada.

Canada has always been looking for immigrants. Immigration Canada fetches more talented and skilled workers from overseas. They are required to man the many roles vacant in different sectors of the economy. In these times of COVID-19 related crisis, Canada has not stepped down its immigration activities. The country is still accepting visa applications. Many of those are for temporary visas related to visit, study and work.

If you are not well acquainted with the temporary visas issued by Canada, here are a few helpful queries with answers.

Temporary visa – What is it?

Those in Canada except the country’s citizens and permanent residents have very restricted rights and freedom. These people reside in Canada on a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). The visa is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These people include students, tourists, and workers.

Does everyone visiting Canada need a temporary visa?

If you are arriving in Canada from a visa-exempt country, you don’t need a visa to enter Canada. For such a privileged person, it’s necessary to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This should be obtained before boarding the flight to Canada. If such a person is coming by land, either TRV or eTA isn't necessary.

Is a study permit necessary to study in Canada?

A study permit isn’t needed if your studies in Canada will last less than 6 months. Any studies beyond 6 months need a Study Permit along with a Temporary Resident Visa. Here too a visa-exempt country is not obliged to do so.

How to qualify for a work permit in Canada?

There are many ways to qualify for a Work Permit. In some instances, your Canadian employer must demonstrate an inability to find Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents to man the position with an immigrant worker.

What can be done if the work permit application is refused?

There’s no formal procedure of appeal upon rejection of an application. You may reapply. But that should best be done after having some considerable additions in status or information submitted in the application.

How long can one stay in Canada on TRV?

In case of absence of stamp, handwritten date or document in your passport showing an expiry date, you can be a temporary resident for no more than 6 months. These months will be calculated from the day of your arrival in Canada.

How can a temporary stay be extended?

The application for extension of temporary stay should be given at least 30 days before your visa status expires. If your temporary visa expires after you submit the extension application, and a decision on it is pending, you can stay back in Canada. This is possible under an implied status which ends upon decision is made on the extension application.
