Australian Research Universities demand Special Visas for Indian researchers

Australian Research Universities have demanded Special Visas for Indian researchers. The Group of Eight has called for liberal visa norms for students who seek to study Doctoral degree in either of the two nations.

The report in this regard has been compiled by academics from both Australia and India. The report has identified certain barriers that are affecting the flow of Doctoral students amongst both the nations. These include logistical barriers, lacking awareness, and finance. It has also recommended the Government of Australia to launch Special Visas for Doctoral degree holders and researchers.

The CEO of Australian Research Universities GO8 Vicki Thomson said that Government of India has launched several initiatives for reforming its economy. It has also been analyzed the manner in which Indian firms and Austrian firms in India can jointly sponsor Indian students for Doctoral studies. This will be applicable to Ph.D. projects that are relevant to their businesses, added Thomson, as quoted by the Business Standard.

Devang Khakhar the Director of IIT Bombay said that it is the need of the hour that Doctoral holders in India cater to the growing need for faculties in educational institutions. He said that there is a huge demand for Doctoral degree holders in India owing to the increase in institutes of learning.

Khakhar also added that IIT Bombay is jointly running a Doctoral program with the University of Monash Australia from 11 years. From 2018 it will also invite student in Australia to pursue their Doctoral degree here. Till now only Indian students were availing benefit from the joint Doctoral program.

The report offers the statistics for the number of Doctoral students in Australia from India for 2016 as 1, 093 students. This is an increase of 60% since 2006.
