More than half million Australian overseas students have been urged to verify their salaries for adequacy by an open letter from The Fair Work Ombudsman. The letter will urge these students to avail free of cost advice and assistance regarding their rights at the workplace in Australia. In 2016 almost 49% of the lawsuits filed by the Fair Work Ombudsman were related to Australia visa holders. Amongst these more than 1/3rd of the cases were pertaining to Australian overseas students, as quoted by the SMH. The research of the Fair Work Ombudsman has revealed that many overseas students in Australia are unaware regarding their rights in the workplace. They were also clueless for seeking help, added the report. Some of the overseas students who participated in the research informed that they were anxious to complain over their employers. Deportation threat and being blacklisted for future jobs by employers was the fear, said the students. Natalie James said that 60% of the Australian overseas students were not having much hope for the betterment of issues related to the workplace. She has now urged 564, 869 overseas students in Australia to open up regarding their workplace issues. Any concerns with regards to salary scale or workplace issues can be reported. Ms. James stressed that Australian overseas students had rights on par with resident workers in Australia. Natalie James elaborated that the % of overseas students in Australia who report workplace issues with Fair Work Ombudsman is highly less when compared with visa holders. This is in spite of the fact that overseas students stand for an important proportion of international visitors entitled to work rights, added Ms. James.
