The Government of Australia is planning to makes changes to the Regional Skilled Visas. This will mandate that the immigrants reside in rural regions for a fixed period of time. It has also been revealed that the Government is yet to take any final decision. Incentives may also be offered to the immigrants to remain in the regional areas.

David Gillespie the Families Assistant Minister said that it was counterproductive and disappointing for the regional firms that sponsored the immigrants when they shift to the cities. Mohammad Al Khafaji Chief Executive of Welcome to Australia said that the details of the proposal will have to be examined. However, confining the free movement is not the answer while fresh immigrants are welcomed, he added.

The CEO further said that the debate must look beyond why immigrants are not staying in the regions. The overall scenario must be examined as to why people, in general, do not remain in the regions, he added.

AL Khafaji elaborated that any curbs will not permit for alterations in the circumstances of the immigrants. Imposing curbs is not what defines Australia as a nation. What are the consequences if the immigrants do not remain with the firm that sponsored them owing to work violations, added Khafaji.

Incentives must be offered to immigrants who settle in regions that taking punitive actions. This must be applied universally to all who relocate to regions rather than just immigrants, said Khafaji.

David Radford the Sociology Lecturer at the University of South Australia said that several issues may result from the mismatch of ground reality and policy. Immigrants must have a feeling of belongingness for the regions in order to retain them, he added, as quoted by the ABC NET AU.
