Allocation for immigrants’ intake in Australian Immigration Program for 2016-17 has not been fully delivered and this is unlike the previous years. There has been a significant deficit in the share of visas offered in certain categories. These include General Skilled Immigration, Parent Visas, Other Family Visas and Special Eligibility Program. For 2016 – 17, the overall numbers of immigrants’ intake in Australian Immigration Program was planned at 190,000. However, there has been a deficit of 6, 392 for overall places. In the General Skilled Immigration category, there has been a significant decrease in the numbers of visas that were offered. In the category Skilled Independent visas, there was a shortage of 3.6% or 1, 568 places. In the stream sponsored by Territory/State, there was a shortage of 11.8% or 3, 425 places. The overall shortage in this category was 6.8% or 5,000 places, as quoted by the ACACIA AU. The results are actually discouraging. The reason is that it is really competitive to receive an invitation to apply for Skill Select. The results point out that there are many numbers of applicants who receive an invitation from Skill Select but do not proceed with the submitting application for General Skilled Immigration. Almost 2/3rds of the nominated program allocation from the Territory/States went to the applicants from offshore. This is really surprising. For offering a nomination, many Territories and States in Australia now mandate either residence in the Territory/ State or a job offer.
