Alberta’s reforms in immigration plans enrich the prospects of Canada immigration. This is especially true for international students. Now, the province is promoting the Student Entrepreneur Program and Foreign Graduate Startup Visa Program to include graduates from US universities finding it impossible to stay and advance a career in the US.

This follows the recent decision announced by the US President Donald Trump. He had decided to freeze all employment visas till the end of 2020. He also decided to send out foreign students who joined a full-time online study program.

The worth of missed opportunities with talented and skilled graduates by the US is rightly recognized by Alberta. The province has a technology sector that needs more people with relevant skills and qualifications. These tech workers who work in Canada are potential contributors to the economy. They could even come up as valuable start-up entrepreneurs.

The growth of the technology sector is a major strategy in the economic recovery plan of Alberta ever since COVID-19 has led to the nation’s lockdown. The province’s government is planning steps like:

  • create an Innovation Employment Grant program
  • enhance 5G initiatives
  • support to develop artificial intelligence
  • capital investments for tech startups

Then pounding taken by Alberta’s economy due to COVID-19 had led to the province reducing its immigration targets for 2020 by 1/3rd. Alberta has also requested the federal government to remove many categories of occupations from the TFWP (Temporary Foreign Worker Program) for Alberta.

Alberta has taken steps to enhance services to establish a connection between employers and available workers. The government is also facilitating an increase in training opportunities in jobs that are facing a persistent shortage of skills.

Also, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program will turn into the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program. 4 new streams will be launched to invigorate entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs and tech start-ups are expected to increase economic growth in rural communities.
